TB control program

TB Control Program

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Pakistan faces a substantial burden of tuberculosis (TB), ranking fifth globally among high-burden countries. With an estimated 510,000 new TB cases and approximately 15,000 drug-resistant TB cases emerging annually. NHSP Sindh is strategically focused on significantly increasing provincial TB case notification. This objective necessitates a multi-faceted approach, aiming to enhance the contribution of both healthcare providers and community-level case detection efforts. Key areas of intervention include: strengthening the involvement of Lady Health Workers; comprehensive capacity building for Primary Health Care (PHC) workers; bolstering digital screening and laboratory services; implementing and scaling up TB Preventive Therapy (TPT); expanding active case finding initiatives; and improving data reporting and program monitoring. These concerted efforts are designed to ensure that comprehensive TB care, including proper diagnostic services, is improved and readily available at the PHC level across Sindh.

Strengthening TB Control

One-day training on TB DOTS was successfully conducted for Lady Health Supervisors and Lady Health Workers across 13 districts under the World Bank initiative. This training aimed to enhance LHWs’ capacity in TB case detection, patient follow-up, and adherence to treatment protocols.

Scaling up LHW interventions in Sindh

A strategic coordination meeting was convened with the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (RMNCH) program to advance the scale-up of Lady Health Worker (LHW) interventions in Sindh. The meeting addressed critical areas including the reinforcement of referral pathways, the mitigation of operational challenges, and the fostering of enhanced inter-programmatic collaboration between the Tuberculosis (TB) control team and the RMNCH program. A primary goal is to achieve a measurable increase in TB case notifications by LHWs within the province of Sindh.
